The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra opens the 2017/18 Pops Series at the Salem Civic Cener on Friday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. with “Ray, Motown, & Beyond” – a high energy program featuring singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ellis Hall.
Ellis Hall was signed to the CrossOver Records label in 2002 and mentored by none other than Ray Charles at Ray’s RPM Studios. He is a seasoned and accomplished songwriter, arranger, producer, and vocalist in possession of a powerful 5-octave range, and is a master of multiple instruments including, piano, guitar, keyboards, and bass.
With a reputation as the “Ambassador of Soul,” Hall has performed with giants like Patti LaBelle, Natalie Cole, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Sheile E. and many others. Hall was a member of Oakland Soul band “Tower of Power” and was the lead voice for the animated California Raisins.
As a session musician in Los Angeles, Hall has been a featured artist on records with artists such as John Klemmer, Carl Anderson, Larry Dunn and Kenny G. In Hollywood, he sang for live action and animated films such as “The Lion King 2,” “Shrek 2,” “Invincible” and “Bruce Almighty,” and acting in the comedy “Big Momma’s House” and the crime drama “Catch Me If You Can”.
