Premium Loge Seating - 43, Gold Seating - $28, Silver Seating - $24, Bronze Seating - $18
Jim McGuinn, later known as Roger, was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scene when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds, Roger toured and performed folk music with the Limeliters, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director and guitarist on Judy Collins #3.
McGuinn, a Chicago native, studied at the Old Town School of Folk Music and was active on Chicago's folk scene, where he was strongly influenced as a teenager by Bob Gibson. Within a few weeks of finishing high school, McGuinn was working with the Limeliters in California, playing guitar and banjo on their album "Tonight: In Person." McGuinn is also on the Chad Mitchell Trio's albums: "Mighty Day on Campus" and “The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End.” Before returning to a solo career in 1981, McGuinn worked with greats such as Gene Clark and David Crosby. Today his folk roots and beautiful acoustic sound makes a wonderful additional to Shaftman Performance Hall’s 10th Anniversary Season of performances.
Roger McGuinn Full Biography
Roger McGuinn was born James Joseph McGuinn III in Chicago in 1942. The son of professional writers, he toured with them as a child, promoting their best selling book, "Parents Can't Win."
A decade later he returned to Chicago where he studied at the OldTownSchool of Folk Music. McGuinn became a folk singing fixture within the Chicago music scene. Within a few weeks of finishing high school, McGuinn was working as accompanist for the Limeliters in California, on their album, "Tonight In Person." McGuinn's 12-string guitar and 5-string banjo playing are also evident on the Chad Mitchell Trio's albums, "Mighty Day On Campus," and "Live At The Bitter End."
After touring for two years with singer Bobby Darin, McGuinn moved to New York where he worked in the fabled BrillBuilding, as a song writer. He co-wrote and performed with Darin as the "City Surfers" on a very rare surf single, "Beach Ball," released on Capitol Records in July of 1963.
McGuinn fronted the Byrds from 1964 until 1973 when he began his solo career. He recorded five albums for Columbia Records, and then re-joined Clark and Hillman for three albums on Capitol.
In 1981 he began his Jack Kerouac inspired adventure, and went on the road with his acoustic guitar. By 1990 McGuinn was back in the studio producing "Back From Rio." The first single, "King Of The Hill," co-written with long time friend Tom Petty soared to number one on the rock charts. That song is also included in acoustic form on "Live From Mars."
When asked about his future plans, McGuinn replies, "Andres Segovia continued performing all his life. That's what I plan to do." Orangeries Presentation at Bower Center for the Arts May 20 - Orangeries presentation at Bower Center for the Arts - 3:00pm - Orangeries were a fad in America during the late 1700s and early 19th century, and several prominent families built them on their estates. An Orangerie is similar to a greenhouse or conservatory, and the earliest ones were constructed in Europe and eventually they made their way to America including Bedford which has a very rare surviving Orangerie from the 1840s. The name reflects the original use of a structure as a place where citrus trees and other delicate plants were kept alive through the winter months in tubs under cover, surviving harsh frosts and winter weather although they were not necessarily expected to flower and bear fruit. Sergei Troubetzkoy will present this program. - Bower Center for the Arts, 305 North Bridge Street, Bedford - Free - 540-586-4235 - www.bowercenter.org Seniors Majors Exhibition Senior Majors Exhibition

Tickets on sale to Jefferson Center members Tuesday, March 20 at 8:30 AM

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy’s unique style – he calls it simply “finger style” – is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that – and more – on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this “fingerpicker” style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans.
Emmanuel has had an amazing year fueled by a successful world tour, a new website, a new album, a new PBS TV special, and, most recently, he received the very prestigious CMA Global Country Artist of the Year Award. The Global Artist Award, presented to Tommy by country star Keith Urban during CMA’s Global Artist Party at the Billboard Country Music Summit in Nashville, TN, recognizes outstanding achievement by an artist who has furthered country music’s popularity and brought it attention in a foreign territory. Previous winners include Paul Brandt (Canada), Troy Cassar-Daley (Australia), Lee Kernaghan (Australia), and Jason McCoy (Canada). 2012 VOCAL ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
Presented in partnership with the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI) founders Joan Dornemann and Paul Nadler of the Metropolitan Opera, the Vocal Arts and Music Festival unites opera's rising stars with legendary coaches and outstanding instrumentalists for two weeks of master classes, performances, and more. Blacksburg hosts one of the three international IVAI programs--the other two are in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Montreal, Canada.
Through a comprehensive arts initiative, Virginia Tech has made a strong commitment to the arts on campus and in the surrounding communities. The cornerstone of the initiative is the $94 million Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. Opening in late 2013, the Center for the Arts will include a 1,260-seat, state-of-the-art performance hall for music, theatre, and dance performance and visual arts galleries for traditional, digital, and new media exhibitions. It also will house the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology, an applied research environment wherein researchers from multiple disciplines, artists, and educators collaborate to develop new processes and tools to enhance teaching and learning in PK-12 and higher education environments with an emphasis on math, science, social studies, and language arts.

Location:
Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center
Alice Hohenberg Federico '67, artist talk and reception. Ceramic artist Federico draws inspiration from ancient Greek vessels, traditional Japanese techniques, and modern English pottery to create sensuous sculptures. Her rounded vases feature elaborate handles, highlighting the contrast between the functionality and delicacy of her work. She reviews her career, inspiration, and life after Hollins as part of her Reunion exhibition at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum. Lance Esplund of "The Wall Street Journal" writes, "Federico's vases evoke classical antiquity; her handles bring those forms into the here and now." A 1967 graduate of Hollins College, Federico currently lives and works in New York. Exhibit through September 15. Reception will follow the lecture. WBOB Afternoon Jamboree Reunion June 2 3 pm. Charlottesville, VA (March 12, 2012)
Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers have announced tour dates in support of their #1 bluegrass album, Rare Bird Alert, which recently received a Grammy® nomination for Best Bluegrass Album. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers will make stops at several venues and festivals including a performance at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA, as well as multiple nights with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston, MA. The tour comes on the heels of a banner year that saw Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers winning ‘Entertainer of the Year’ at the 2011 International Bluegrass Association Awards.
In the roughly three years since Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers have been touring together they have delighted audiences at Bonnaroo, New Orleans’ Jazzfest and The Newport Folk Festival to name a few. They’ve embarked on four widely acclaimed tours with many critics noting Martin’s “exceptional musicianship.” The OC Register said “what’s so heartening and wonderful to see is Steve Martin back on stage, doing both things he does best – playing banjo and being funny.”
Rare Bird Alert has received critical acclaim since its 2011 release with reviews citing the album as “filled with deft musicianship and inventive word play” (The Tennessean). The album features 13 new Martin-penned tracks, including a live version of “King Tut,” and special guest vocals from Paul McCartney and the Dixie Chicks. Martin co-wrote two songs from the album with the Steep Canyon Rangers. Rare Bird Alert was produced by Tony Trischka and released on Rounder Records.
Steve Martin is a four-time Grammy® winner, the latest for The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, which won Best Bluegrass Album (2009), in addition he won for his collaboration with Earl Scruggs on Foggy Mountain Breakdown (2001) and two for comedy albums Wild and Crazy Guy (1978) and Let’s Get Small (1977.)
