Kathy Mattea, the beloved, multi-Grammy-winning singer says of her new album, COAL “It’s a coming together of a lot of different threads in my life”. Mattea says she wanted to pay tribute to “my place and my people”. Her passion for music, her coal mining heritage and environmental and social justice issues weave together throughout this work. Kathy will spend two days at the Jefferson Center this season. In addition to the not-to-be-missed concert, Mattea will participate in an Eco-Arts themed program with the Clean Valley Council and the Jefferson Center.

Kathy’s “My Coal Journey” will be presented during Earth Summit, a program for local youth to understand current environmental issues and encourage environmental stewardship. My Coal Journey incorporates stories from her family history and her current advocacy for the environment combined with a slideshow and a performance of songs from Coal.

The English Concert continues to perform Baroque and Classical music with the passion, sophistication and technical mastery established at its creation. The English Concert lead by artistic director and conductor/harpsichordist Harry Bicket, performs an evening concert featuring the following works: Purcell’s Suite From King Arthur and Suite From the Fairy Queen, Vivaldi’s Sonata in D minor op. 1, no. 12 ‘La Folia’ and Concerto for Two Trumpets, and Telemann’s Tafelmusik and Concerto for Viola & Strings. Founded in 1953, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra is a cornerstone of the Arts in our region. Roanoke Ballet Theatre is truly a jewel in the crown of the City of Roanoke. It is located in the center of Roanoke’s Historic Grandin Village, with easy access to parking, shopping, and restaurants. Opera Roanoke’s 36th season opens October 14 and 16th with performances of Verdi’s action-packed drama, Il Trovatore. This original production promises to be an exciting one! There are three things we like to do at RCT, help kids learn, make family memories and create community. This season we will do all three. First up, WRECKED RCT4CTEENS, is a program that helps teens with issues they face everyday. WRECKED is part of this program. This year we are committed to present options and consequences to underage drinking in order to help teens make good choices. The generosity of Virginia Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and so many others have made it possible for 9th graders to see WRECKED and attend an informative workshop led by RCT staff, cast and health professionals.

Join the Kandinsky Trio as they celebrate their 24th anniversary season at Roanoke College! Drawing on repertoire and guests old and new, the 2011-2012 season has something for everyone.  From the passionate Dvorak A Major Piano Quintet to Mike Reid’s new creation for the Trio based on Michael Jackson’s “Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch” with the composer as narrator, the Kandinsky Trio continues to present their innovative programming on their home turf at Olin Hall.  Sandwiched in between these extremes will be masterworks by Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chausson, Bartok, and a theater piece by Jon Grier.  Don’t miss it

Gamut (Gypsies and Misfits Unknown Theatre) – Our goals are: 1) to make alternative or under-produced theatre available to Roanoke audiences; and 2) give local actors the opportunity to be challenged and stretched by such theatre.  Hand in hand with this objective, we seek to provide not only training for actors and technicians, but theatrical experiences which strive for a level of professionalism beyond a community theatre mind-set while still remaining firmly planted within the community.  Gamut is a 501c3 designated theatre group.
