Visions – August 2010

1. Three Exhibitions and Recent Awards at Signature 9 Gallery

Signature 9 boasts three new exhibitions in the month of August. Sunburned Zebra features black and white paintings with a touch of red, After the Graphite, challenged artists to display their sketches or gray scale studies alongside finished pieces, and featured artist Gerrie Brown presents a body of collage work.  Sunburned Zebra and After the Graphite are open until the end of September, and Gerrie Brown’s work will close at the end of August.

City Magazine would also like to congratulate the artists of Signature 9 Gallery as they have collectively won more than 17 regional and national awards in 2010.  Many of the contests entered were highly competitive and awards include Gari Stephenson’s Best in Show at the Southern Watercolor Society 33rd Annual Exhibition in Madisonville, KY, Sandi D’Alessandro’s Best in Show at Virginia Watercolor Society 31st Annual Exhibition in Glen Allen, VA, Robin Poteet’s Artists to Watch in Watercolor Artist Magazine and Nancy Stark’s Best in Show at the National Juried Art Exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg, VA.

2.  Osterhaus Annual Show, New Original Oils at The Little Gallery

August 7 – 28

In his upcoming annual show at the lake, Greg Osterhaus will include signature cow “portraits” and colorful landscape vistas.  Over 20 new works will be on display. Some of the new landscapes reflect a wider view of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains.

In talking about this show, Greg discusses that he’s “had an interest in seeing more of the land by pulling back from the subject matter.  While I’ve enjoyed painting landscapes as close-ups, I’m reacquainting myself with familiar territory through these wider vistas.”

3.  5 Friends Plein Air Art Group at Gallery 108

August 1 – 29

Martha Lalka, Judy Lochbrunner, Bonnie Mason, Mary Anne Meador and Angela Shields will show at Gallery 108, 108 Market Street, Roanoke. Opening Reception, August 5, 5 – 9pm.

4.  Nelson Gallery’s 11th Annual Juried Show

August 2 – 28

Juror David Mickenberg, executive director of Roanoke’s Taubman Museum, selected 43 varied paintings, scuptures and photographs from over 300 entries.  All were inspired by the theme “Inside/Outside.”  The show will be on display at Nelson Gallery in downtown Lexington from August 2 through 28. 5. Shelley Koopmann Exhibit at Artifacts Gallery in Boonesboro

Now through September 30

Artist Shelley Koopmann grew up in New York surrounded by art and music, but it wasn’t until she and her husband retired to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, that she was able to pursue her dream of painting.

Koopmann works primarily in pastels, a pure pigment medium used by such famous artists as Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt.  She finds the Virginia landscape wonderfully inspiring, and also continues to paint the beaches of Long Island and the coast of Maine.  She has received numerous awards including First Place  at the League of Roanoke Artists Showcase and also at the 3rd Annual Westlake Library Juried Show.  Her work is a part of the Carilion Clinics’ permanent collections as well as private collectors.

An opening reception for Shelley Koopmann will be held August 6, 2010 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm.

6. Wearable Art Exhibition at Gallery by the James

August 30 – October 3

The Gallery by the James, 19827 Main Street in Buchanan, will feature “wearable” art by gallery member Lois Bittner and by gallery artist Karen Jackson August 13 – October 3, 2010.  A reception for the artists will be held on Friday, August 13 during the Evening in Buchanan from 5-9 PM. The public is invited to attend.

7. Homelands: Portraits of Ireland and Israel by Gordon Wetmore in the Hooker Garrett Gallery at the Piedmont Arts Center

Now – August 28, 2010.

Homelands, contains work from Gordon Wetmore’s collections Promised Land and Ireland, both of which were compiled for and published as full–color books in the 1970′s and 80′s.  These works capture the gentleness and beauty of Ireland and Israel, two countries whose tumultuous histories have fostered a strong sense of identity in their peoples. Homelands also includes paintings of scenic locations within the United States as well as portraits of Allan and James McClain of Martinsville.  Mrs. Charlotte McClain, a long–time friend of Wetmore’s commissioned the works of her late husband, Allan, and her son.  Wetmore has also created portraits of American presidents, British royalty and various celebrities.   www.PiedmontArts.org.

8. Grand Opening of Viridian Art Gallery in the West Campbell Arts District

August 5, 2010 5:00 pm- 9:00 pm

The new Viridian Gallery will have it’s grand opening during Art by Night on Thursday, August 5th between 5 and 9. It is located on the third floor of the 110 West Campbell building, where other galleries will also be open that night. The opening show is “How Far is Heaven” a collection of landscape images by five artists: photographs by Anne Pfeiffer and Keith Pfeiffer, oil paintings by Erika Breiding Lucas and Jamie Cohen, monoprints by Jennifer Fowler, and drawings by Erika Breiding Lucas. The mission of the gallery is to provide a venue for artists who have created a body of work that communicates an honest, personal vision.
