Opera Roanoke Presents: Lucia Di Lammermoor
Jefferson Center
Friday, April 30th at 8:00 pm
Sunday, May 2nd at 2:30 pm

This towering masterpiece of madness and murder is perhaps the most beloved of all bel canto operas. It’s a tragic story that rends our hearts in sympathy for Lucia, a guileless young woman who is trapped between loyalty to the demands of her heart and those of her selfish family. Forced to marry against her will, Lucia finally is driven over the edge into total insanity—and into an act of justifiable homicide!

But Donizetti’s music mounts an effective and persuasive defense of Lucia’s actions. From the very beginning of the opera the composer bathes us in glorious romantic melody, establishing the sincerity and depth of Lucia’s love for Edgardo.  The famous sextet is testimony to the unbearable torture that is driving her to distraction. But it is the irrefutable proof of the spell-binding Mad Scene that proves beyond a reasonable doubt who the true victim of this nightmare really is.

Amy Cofield Williamson brings Lucia to life in this concert performance with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
