Painting for Joy: Japanese Painting of the 1990’s
November 09, 2007 – December 31, 2007
Shaftman Gallery, American I & II Galleries

The Japan Foundation, in conjunction with the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta, presents:
Painting for Joy: New Japanese Painting in the 1990s — a worldwide touring exhibition organized by the Japan Foundation, featuring the paintings of nine contemporary Japanese artists, including internationally acclaimed artists Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara. Painting for Joy is an attempt to show how young Japanese artists have understood and tried to further develop artistic expression in painting during the final decade of the twentieth century, a time of rapid development in information networks and communications technology.

The nine artists whose work is featured in this exhibition were born in or around the 1960s and grew up in an advanced consumer society, surrounded by a plethora of semiotics and information. By portraying the realities that actually surround us, they are attempting to open up new horizons in communication between people and painting. We hope that this exhibition will enable viewers to enjoy this sort of communication.

The O. Winston Link Museum

Period photographs by Alexander Gardner, Mathew Brady, and others are exhibited
alongside contemporary Civil War-themed pinhole photographs by Willie Anne Wright

The Civil War continues to be a subject of endless fascination for Americans and the world; and fueling this attraction is the fact that it was the first war to be extensively photographed. Continuing through March 1, 2008, the O. Winston Link Museum makes a key regional contribution to the lore and understanding of that period with two compelling offerings.

The first, Civil War Photographs from the David L. Hack Collection, features 50 original photographs on loan from the Chrysler Museum of Art from a major collection acquired by them in 1998. As well as such iconic images as Alexander Gardner’s classic Lincoln portrait, and his Lincoln and Tad (the last photograph for which the president sat), most of the other works have rarely if ever been exhibited or published. Among the facets that make this collection unique is its assortment of print sizes and shapes, as well as its wide range of subjects, including haunting images of Andersonville Prison and Gardner’s powerful series of the hanging of the Lincoln conspirators in July of 1865.

The O. Winston Link Museum is located at 101 Shenandoah Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24016
